Body Protected Areas

At Kingship Electrical, we specialise in certifying Body-Protected Areas, with over 20 years of experience in the Medical Electrical field.

Body Protected Area is an area within a medical facility where patients are treated, diagnosed or monitored using electrical medical appliances. There are a number of requirements for such areas including that electrical outlets are protected by a 10mA RCD to prevent electrocution.

Cardiac Areas

Cardiac designated areas require the same protection as Body Protected Areas plus special Earthing Requirements.

Equipotential earthing is installed in rooms classified as ‘Cardiac Protected’ to minimise any voltage differences between earthed parts of equipment and any other exposed metal in the room to prevent patient micro-electrocution.

Annual testing is required as per 3003:2011 Standard.

Medical / Dental Testing

If it has been more than one year since the last test, we recommend getting an inspection completed as soon as possible. The date of the last inspection can be found at the top right corner of the sign in your Body-Protected / Cardiac Area as shown on the sign.

Inspection Times:

  • Approx 30 minutes per Body Protected Area
  • Approx 4-8 Hours per Cardiac area

Inspections Include:

  • Every socket tested to ensure that there is an earth, neutral and phase, and that it trips the RCD as per the AS/NZS 3003:2011 standard
  • Point to Point Earth Potential ( Cardiac Areas ONLY )
  • 50 mV test between point to point selection ( Cardiac Areas ONLY )
  • A label for the Body-Protected / Cardiac area
  • An emailed PDF report of the results
  • A certificate of verification
  • A breakdown of any repairs if required
  • Test and Tag for Non-Patient Areas
